PIE, CAKE, JAM CONTEST OFFERS
TASTE OF DOWNHOME KEYPORT

Some Bayshore residents are already rolling up their sleeves and donning their aprons in preparation for Sunday’s Pie, Cake and Jam Contest at the 6th Annual Keyport Country Jamboree and Food Festival.

The competition is among the event’s most popular features, attracting a wide variety of homemade pies and cakes, jams and jellies. The contest is open to everyone, with participants required to bake their own cake or pie or submit a jar of homemade jelly or jam from a recipe of their choice. Entries with a $5 fee will be accepted from 10 a.m. until noon on Sunday at the event.

Barbara Eckert, owner of Second Hand Prose, 8 Main St., and a member of the Keyport Business Alliance, which is hosting the Jamboree, will return this year to manage both the Pie, Cake and Jam contest and the equally popular – but not quite as delicious – Scarecrow Contest.

Eckert says the homemade goodies are judged on presentation, taste, and creativity, with prizes in each of the three homemade categories going to those who attain the highest overall score.

Judging will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, and Eckert says the winners will be posted at 4 p.m.

The other “winners” in the Pie, Cake, and Jam Contest are festival attendees, who will get the opportunity to sample the entries following the judging.

“All cake and pie entries will be sliced after the judging at around 3 p.m. and sold by the slice for $1 each,” Eckert says. Jams and jellies also will be offered for sale.

Winners will receive both cash prizes and gift certificates.
